(Sonoma Coast)
This steep hillside location of the Ulises Valdez Silver Eagle Vineyard, with its blanketing fog and consistent afternoon breezes provide for the quality winemakers dream about. The nose of the 2009 Semper Ulises Chardonnay is reminiscent of fresh out of the oven pie-crust, Fuji apple, and wet granite. Night harvested and gently basket pressed before dawn, the wine is rich in body yet incredibly balanced and elegant, possessing pure mineral notes and a pallet of toasted almond, lime-curd and lightly toasted brioche. Clean, balanced acidity and well integrated oak give this wine a superb finish. As Semper enthusiasts know, we seek out vineyards that afford incredible balance and elegance, and this vineyard leads the pack.
